Heidi Dugan"I joined SWE as a freshman to get to know other female engineering students. I was able to network and meet a lot of great people, but I quickly learned that the organization had much more to offer. My favorite benefits of being involved in SWE were that it provided career opportunities and it allowed me to give back to the community. The most valuable opportunity I was able to take advantage of as a member of SWE was attending the national conference. I traveled with fellow members to attend a conference that offered workshops, various presentations, and a career fair that hundreds of companies attended. From this conference, I was able to talk to representatives to learn more about career opportunities, I interviewed with a number of top companies and gained an internship with the Boeing Company. The internship led to a full time engineering position after graduation. I plan to stay involved in SWE so I can give back to an organization that gave so much to me. In joining SWE, I gained new friends, leadership skills, and an internship that led to my first post graduation engineering position with a great company. Ashley Ullmer"I began my involvement with our SWE section as the fundraiser and events coordinator my junior year, and served as the vice president in my senior year. For both of those years, I attended the national SWE conference with 9 other UWM girls - a record-breaking turnout for the school and by far my most proud SWE memory. A longtime automotive enthusiast, I landed a summer internship offer from Nissan Motor Company through attending the career fair at the conference. I accepted the offer to work as a product quality intern at their Mississippi factory, and thus earned a foot in the door to my dream career: working with a car company. I returned from work at Nissan to graduate from UWM - and with the automotive experience, went on to accept a full time offer to work as a quality engineer for Honda Motor Company at its multiple factories on the outskirts of Columbus, Ohio. I enjoy my job, working quality control at the final assembly points for the Honda CRV, Element, and Accord CrossTour. It's a lot like going to work for the Discovery Channel every day! I have only SWE to thank for launching me into my lifelong dream of working in the automotive industry. I've met a lot of fascinating people - including the girls from UWM's SWE. Enjoy your years and membership while you still can, and make the most of it!! Thank you for giving me opportunity, SWE." Graduated 2008, Industrial Engineering BS |
